🚂 THE FRONT PORCH

All aboard! So Saturday I dug the tackle box out of the garage, blew the dust off it, and promised my youngest we'd "catch the big one" down at the river. Two hours later we'd caught one shoe, a clump of weeds the size of a beach ball, and a sunburn I'm still apologizing to my shoulders for. The fish? Safe. Laughing at us, probably. But you know what — the kid talked the whole ride home about doing it again, and that right there is the whole point.

That's June in Parrish, folks. It's hot, it's loud, the afternoon storms roll in like clockwork, and there's a fishing festival and Father's Day stacking up on the same weekend. So grab the coffee, find your spot on the porch, and let's get into the good stuff.

📰 COMMUNITY NEWS & THE PARRISH PULSE

1. Parrish Talks Storm Season — and a Brand-New School Rising on Rutland Road

Civic meeting: The Parrish Civic Association and Parrish Area Business Alliance met June 9 at Parrish Community High School (7505 Fort Hamer Road), with a public forum on hurricane prep, evacuation planning, and storm recovery led by County Emergency Management.

Scholarship: The group presented its inaugural Norma Kennedy Scholarship to a 2026 Parrish Community High graduate.

Growing fast: Rye Ranch Elementary, at 18655 Rutland Road, is on track to open for the 2026–27 school year, and the Manatee County School Board was set to finalize its 2027–28 academic calendar this week.

Anybody who's idled at the Moccasin Wallow light knows Parrish is booming, and this week proved it on two fronts. The town gathered to get smart about hurricane season before it gets serious, while a brand-new elementary keeps rising to keep up with all the new neighbors.

Bottom line: stock the storm kit now, and if you've got little ones, double-check which school they're zoned for before the back-to-school scramble.

🗓️ UPCOMING EVENTS & FAMILY ACTIVITIES

🎯 Details: Free admission. Fishing tournaments, a kids' fishing competition, cornhole, live music, food vendors, family activities, and a fireworks show Saturday night. Sunday brings weigh-ins, raffles, auctions, and awards.

This is the big one this weekend, and it's free. Drag the family down to the Riverwalk for fishing, music, and fireworks — all of it raising money for a good cause. It's a near-perfect way to kick off Father's Day season without spending a dime.

When the afternoon storm chases you off the porch, here's your move. The Bishop is free this weekend for locals — that's manatees, planetarium shows, and air conditioning, all on the house. Smart parents know a free rainy-day plan is worth its weight in gold.

🌿 Summer Fun Nature Classes at Palma Sola Botanical Park

📍 Location: Palma Sola Botanical Park, Bradenton.

🎯 Details: Hands-on summer learning — opening day is a beekeeping program with Master Beekeeper Kevin Lausman, with future sessions on birding, bonsai, wildlife rescue, botanical journaling, and tree biology.

Want to keep the kids' brains from turning to oatmeal by July? This summer series turns a botanical garden into a classroom, starting with bees and rolling right through birds and backyard science. Cheap, local, and a whole lot smarter than another afternoon of cartoons.

🏪 SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT & LOCAL HERO

🌟 Foxtail Coffee Co. — North River Ranch

📍 Location: North River Ranch, Parrish (just off Moccasin Wallow Road).

🏪 What they do: Florida-grown coffee company with a Parrish drive-thru, plus Kelly's homemade ice cream counter and beer and wine.

❤️ Why we love 'em: Local owners, a real community hangout, and a one-stop morning-coffee, after-dinner-ice-cream kind of spot.

💬 Foxtail planted its flag in North River Ranch and quickly became one of those places folks just gravitate to. Roll through the drive-thru for your morning cup, or park it inside and let the kids talk you into a scoop of Kelly's homemade ice cream. It's the kind of homegrown spot that makes a fast-growing community still feel like a neighborhood.

🍽️ NEW & NOTEWORTHY RESTAURANTS

🔥 Oar & Iron Raw Bar & Grill

📍 Location: 8710 US 301 North, Unit 120, Parrish, FL 34219.

🍴 Cuisine: Upscale-casual raw bar and grill — fresh seafood, steaks, and a lively bar.

💡 Good to know: A brand brought up from its Fort Myers and Naples locations, now serving Parrish.

💬 Parrish's dining scene keeps leveling up, and Oar & Iron is the latest proof. Think fresh oysters, a solid grill menu, and a setting nice enough for date night but easygoing enough for the whole crew. If you're hunting for a Father's Day dinner that feels like a treat, put this one on the short list.

💪 FAMILY WELLNESS

🛶🐊 Paddle the Manatee River at Fort Hamer Park

📍 Location: 1605 Fort Hamer Road, Parrish, FL 34219.

🕒 Hours: Park open sunrise to sunset; boat ramp open 24 hours.

🌊 Details: 7.3 riverfront acres with a kayak/canoe launch, fishing pier, dock, restrooms, and parking for about 100 vehicles. Beginner-friendly water with mild currents — great for first-timers and little paddlers.

💬 Here's your "get off the couch" assignment for the week. Fort Hamer is right in our backyard, the launch is easy, and the upstream stretch is calm enough for the kids while still giving you a shot at spotting wildlife. Go early before the heat and the afternoon storms — bring water, sunscreen, and maybe one more shoe than I caught last weekend.

❤️ PET OF THE WEEK

🐕 Meet Hershel — a Senior Siberian Husky Looking for a Soft Landing

🏡 Shelter: Manatee County Animal Services, 305 25th Street West, Palmetto, FL 34221.

🐾 Details: Senior male Siberian Husky. Call (941) 742-5933 with his name to check his status. Note: every Tuesday is Half-Price Tuesday on adoption fees, and fees are waived for pets at the shelter longer than 60 days — plus the Seniors-for-Seniors program offers a $10 fee for adopters 55+

🔗 Adopt: See Hershel's photo and details on the link below.

💬 Hershel's got the husky good looks, the wise old eyes, and that calm, been-there energy only a senior dog brings. Older dogs are the easy button — house-trained, mellow, and grateful for a couch and a slow walk. If you've got room for a gentleman who just wants to retire in Parrish, Hershel is your guy.

👋 THE SEND-OFF

That's the issue, Parrish. This weekend's got fishing lines, fireworks, and a whole town's worth of dads who'd rather lose a tackle box than miss a Saturday with their kids. So make the memory, take the picture, and let the storms roll through — they always do, and so do we. Whether you're casting a line, paddling the river, or just holding down the porch, do it with the people who make this town home.

Until next week — stay gritty, stay healthy, and keep Parrish strong. — Greg
