🚂 THE FRONT PORCH

🚂 All aboard!

It's full-on summer in Parrish, which means the sky cracks open at 3 o'clock sharp, the kids swear the pool is "too warm", and I spent Saturday explaining to my youngest why we can't keep the tree frog that moved into the garage.

He named it Kevin.

Kevin lives here now, apparently.

But hot as it is, our town never slows down.

🌟 This week we've got proud Parrish news, 🌮 real street tacos worth the drive, a night market under the string lights, some smart water-safety reminders for the whole crew, and an 11-month-old pup named Sprout hunting for his forever couch.

🥤 Pour the sweet tea and let's roll.

📰 COMMUNITY NEWS & THE PARRISH PULSE

1. New Heart-Screening Step for Student Athletes

📋 What: A new Florida law now asks certain student athletes to get an ECG (electrocardiogram) heart screening before playing school sports.

📅 When: Took effect July 1, 2026.

🩺 Why It Matters: The screening is meant to catch hidden heart problems before they ever become an emergency on the field.

If you've got a young athlete under your roof, tack this one to the fridge. Starting this month, Florida adds a heart-screening step for certain student athletes before they suit up for school sports.

It's a small check with a big payoff — a little more peace of mind for every parent in the bleachers.

2. County Turns Up the Water Safety for Summer

🚨 What: Manatee County Beach Patrol added lifeguard staffing for the busy summer stretch and is pushing water-safety reminders.

Also: Big Dreams Through Small Steps and the YMCA of Southwest Florida are teaming up to expand swim lessons through the AQUAlibrium drowning-prevention program.

🛟 The Point: Drowning is preventable — and swim lessons are one of the best defenses there is.

Around here, water is everywhere — backyard pools, the river, the Gulf. That's the good life, but it hands us parents a job. The county's adding lifeguards and local folks are making swim lessons easier to get, so sign the kids up and learn the layers of protection.

Let's keep this a summer of good memories.

🏪 SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT & LOCAL HERO

🍦 Sunsets & Sweets

📍 Location: Parrish, FL

🍨 What They Do: A locally owned sweet shop — hand-dipped ice cream, floats, banana splits, and thick milkshakes.

❤️ Why We Love Them: Independent, family-run, and exactly what a hot Parrish afternoon is begging for.

Nothing cools down a Florida summer like hand-dipped ice cream from a hometown shop.

Sunsets & Sweets keeps it simple and keeps it local — cups, cones, floats, and milkshakes made the old-fashioned way.

Skip the drive-thru and hand your dollars to a neighbor instead. 🍦🏡

💪 FAMILY WELLNESS

🌊 Beat the Heat: Fort Hamer Park by the River

📍 Location: Fort Hamer Park, 1 Fort Hamer Rd, Parrish

🌅 Best Time: Early morning or near sunset, before the afternoon storms roll in.

🎣 Good For: Riverside walks, a shady picnic, kayak and boat launch, and easy family fishing.

When the afternoon heat index climbs into "nope" territory, flip your outside time to the cool hours.

Fort Hamer Park sits right on the Manatee River with shade, a breeze, and an easy walking path — perfect for a morning stroll or an evening picnic.

Bring water, wear the sunscreen, and keep an eye on the little ones near the water.

🐾 PET OF THE WEEK

🐾 Meet Sprout!

📍 Shelter: Manatee County Animal Welfare, Palmetto

🏷️ ID & Age: A137068 • about 11 months old, male

Sprout is all puppy heart — young, hopeful, and ready to grow up on somebody's couch.

At 11 months he's past the tiny-tornado stage and right into the fun years.

If your family's got room for a loyal sidekick, he's your guy.

That's the whistle for this week, Parrish. Thanks for riding along — hit reply and tell me who you'd like to see in the spotlight next.

Until next week — stay gritty, stay healthy, and keep Parrish strong.
